REVELATION AND OTHER APOCALYPTIC WRITINGS

This book is sometimes called "The Revelation of St. John the Divine," "The Revelation of Jesus Christ," "The Revelation," "The Apocalypse," or "The Revelation of John." It is the final book in the Christian Scriptures (New Testament) and thus concludes the Bible. The Greek title of the book translates as the "Apocalypse of John." The Greek word "apokalypsis," from which the English word apocalypse was derived, means "revelation, disclosure or unveiling."

Many Christian individuals and groups have predicted a wide range of dates for the end of the world as we know, as a result of data from this book. So far, they have one factor in common: none have come true.

Apocalyptic writings in the Hebrew and Christian Scriptures
About apocalyptic writings:
"Revelation" is the final entry in the Christian Scriptures. It describes a coming period of great danger, destruction, and transition. "The apocalypse...used a symbolic or allegorical language to convey the message about the imminent End...Christian apocalypses are thoroughly frightening for the sadistic punishments inflicted on the inhabitants of hell, for the inventions of extreme torture and dismemberment. The descriptions of Heaven are scarcely less awesome, with pictures of angel servants in the Heavens, singing eternal hymns of praise to a bejewelled Lord whose face is too bright to be perceived."

Apocalyptic literature has been found throughout the Middle East. The first examples of this theme is found in the ancient writings of Babylon and Persia. According to theologian and author Tom Harpur, "British orientalist Gerald Massey wrote that Revelation itself...is really a Christian version of the Mithraic apocalypse 'Bahman Yasht.' Massey says the latter has the same drama drawn out as in Revelation and that all ancient Parsee or Persian sacred books referred to the original scriptures as apocalypses."

Apocalyptic literature typically includes a number of concepts: Time is divided into 2 ages: the present age is ruled by Satan and his demons
the age to come will be ruled by God.
the transition will occur very quickly
the end of the present age will happen in the very near future
the transition will include wars, plagues, famine, earthquakes and other natural disasters

A general resurrection of the dead.
A final judgment.
Satan's supporters will be annihilated.
God's supporters will enter a period of peace and happiness.

The first suggestions of an apocalypse within the Hebrew Scriptures (Old Testament) is found in Isaiah, Jeremiah, Amos, and Micah. They discussed the coming "day of Yahweh." Many dozens of apocalyptic books appeared during the period 165 BCE to the destruction of the Jerusalem temple in 70 CE. One well known example is the "War Scroll" found among the Dead Sea Scrolls and probably written by the Essenes. Another example is preserved in the Hebrew Scriptures as the book of Daniel.

CRIME AND MORALITY INA MI YARD

Lest we never forget the vigilance we have to maintain.

It is so sad and heart and soul wrenching to experience a calamitous tragedy of violent death in the family. I remember when my two sons were both murdered, protecting one another. Yet every year, we are told about new campaigns to combat crime, which costs us the tax payer money to implement these useless and worthless efforts by the authorities. They even have the audacity to appear on TV, telling us that their stats show that crime is down and under control, while at the same time, malls are being robbed, housebreaking and hi-jacking has increased and people are being robbed off their livelihood, all to inflate their ego's; at our expense and lives.

Take the example of the Drive Alive campaign. It has been proven over and over again that the root cause is alcohol. Not only that but it's the primary cause for violence, rapes, murders, indecent acts, bad attitudes, child molestation, adultery, divorce and still it is very much legal. Why, because they cannot live without alcohol. Even the church (which should be the most vociferous) has an excuse for using it. It is the most sanctioned social evil and because 99.99% of ministers and parliamentarians use it, we'll always find other excuses for the carnage of our country, and not own up to "PRIME EVIL". Cigarette smoking has been brought under control. Why not alcohol? It was about to. What happened?

These are things which must be taken into cognizance as they impact our daily lives and to brush them aside is foolishness. It's the reality of our lives. CRIME DOES NOT HAPPEN IN ISOLATION. We the society, create these criminals. They come out of our communities. Criminals do not come in color, they come from all societies. Rich and poor, White, Black, Coloured or Indian and to emphasize on Blacks is unfair and irresponsible to those who, like us, are law abiding. Now we have foreigners who exacerbate that equation.

The other problem is the penal system. The so called "Correctional system". Who ever comes out of prison a better person? If the first prison built gets full, then it means incarceration doesn't work and our prisons are all overflowing. How many prisons can one nation afford to have to reflect its morality. And to talk about prisons like C-MAX, means that somehow we have lost control of the criminal element, because they are becoming incorrigible now. Even so, the inmates are getting younger. We point fingers at other people's children who commit these heinous crimes, yet we forget that our children or family members, neighbours, acquaintances are also in jail for similar offences.

Community service is one of the best social aberration deterrents. Let him wear the bright orange coverall and cuff him with the ankle bracelet. If he broke into your house, let him clean your street, let him clean your property daily, for the so many hours required and if he becomes brazen, put chains on him. Treat him the way he deserves to be treated and after that he'll think twice before any idea of crime. Prison gives you a sense of entitlement and not of remorse and contrition. You come out with tattoos and brag about having met God.

Our political leadership is so fraught with corruption and greed, they consider themselves immunized against the laws of the country and the people they serve. There is such a tangible atmosphere of impunity within our "leaders", they do whatever they please, as long as they are not found out. They do not care that their God (or whoever they believe in) IS watching because they do not have any fear left in their sense of avarice. The only time when there is remorse, is when they are found out. The worst is, they are the heroes and celebs of the masses who emulate them at all costs. One way to have your empty and off the cuff promises believed. The pity is that every time the righteous keep quite, we enable a criminal from out of our midst. Is it any wonder that criminals are springing up everywhere like bad weeds, and younger and younger.

We have campaigns like LoveLife, which teaches us about exponential risks, yet our politicians do the opposite. We have ArriveAlive campaigns about drunken driving, yet our judges do the opposite. How are we ordinary and law abiding citizens supposed to react then? These are people we look up to.

Instead, the more rampant crime becomes, the more Bodyguards they get, not for us but for THEMSELVES. Isn’t it ridiculous?

One way WE can combat this scourge is to teach our children (especially our boy-men) the value of respect, which in this case, OF WOMEN, coupled with the owning of responsibility. When we talk of criminals, we talk of them, our children. The criminal is someone's child, brother, sister, father, uncle etc. This is in OUR power and we can in turn empower them. It’s a long term investment which can be monitored as it progresses. Any aberration, let them do community service like afore-noted. There is nothing as demeaning as being shamed in front of your peers in your youth. And please don't forget the LOVE. It's the most important ingredient in any positive relationship. The universe is full of it. USE IT.

"ENVIRONMENT DETERMINES CHARACTER".

I say all this, not to belittle or undermine the loss of all those bereaved, (I know what it is to lose two children in their prime at the same time) but to arm ourselves with the necessary knowledge to be able to protect ourselves, our loved ones and each other, from this immoral scourge that has been let loose among us, in the guise of Culture, Religion and Politics. With conscious dedication, WE can do it. Any habit is learned and can be replaced or instilled. More so in kids.
